However, I also believe that many people of the working class lost their independence as a result of the revolution. Greed did not increase over this time period because there was just as much greed before the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution was a step forward for women because they wanted to be at home with their children. The working class in England had a higher standard of living during the Industrial Revolution than before it started. Living StandardsThe living standards of the working class of England improved during the Industrial Revolution. At the start of the revolution, from 1790 to 1815, prices and wages grew steeply. At this point, the prices were a little higher than the wages. T his was due to the war against France from 1793 to 1815. Was it just a coincidence that the prices were higher only during the time that the war was going on? I do not believe that this was the case. Prices tend to go up during wars. After the war with France ended, the prices went back down very sharply. Wages did not decrease as much. They went down marginally, but not close to the sharp decline in prices. For the bulk of the revolution, wages were higher than the prices. After the people of England had bought their necessities to live on, they still had money left over because of the decrease in prices. This constituted higher living standards because the people had more money to spend on things other than the necessities. !Pessimists argue that the chart from which this information was taken is incorrect because it only shows factory workers. However, the factories were where most of the people of England were working. People knew that they would make more money in the factories , and consequently, the people of England flocked to the factories. Pessimists also claim that it is unfair to disclaim responsibility for the Industrial Revolution during the war time years with France. (Bin. p.103) The pessimists point out that almost all of the decline in death rates occurred before 1800. This is correct. However, the death rates still went down. They also point out that when the effects of industrialization took hold, the national death rates rose from 21/1000 to 23/1000. But, even though they rose by two more people per thousand, this is insignificant compared with how much the death rates had already decreased. While from the 1810s to the 1830s, the rates went up by two people per thousand, in the 1840s, the death rates went back down to 22/1000. The starting point used by the pessimists of 1820 is unfair because it fails!to include the portion of history during which the death rates fell the most. The pessimists unfairly select 1820 as their starting point, which is to their advantage in the debate, but the technological changes in cotton and iron, which bro ught about industrialization all occurred in the 1770s and 1780s. (Bin. p.104) The pessimists also say that the death rates increased in the cities. In fact, throughout the whole revolution, they did not. In Manchester, the death rates fell from 40/1000 in 1770 to 33/1000 in the 1840s. Two people working power looms could produce as much cotton as seven handloom weavers. The handloom weavers just could not keep up and either were forced out of business or had to go work in a factory. But they lost their right to choose what they wanted to do, and could no longer be handloom weavers. It was just impossible for them. Another reason that people lost their independence during the Industrial Revolution was that Enclosure came about. Enclosure made the small land owners give up their land and find a new job. Only the large land owners could afford to pay for all of the new requirements that Enclosure called for. With Enclosure, all land owners had to pay a flat tax on their land. It was also required to have your land fenced and surveyed. People that did not own a large amount of land could not afford to have these things done. People that !could not afford to pay the tax on their land had their land taken away. About 25% of the households could not afford to pay their taxes on their land. Consequently, all of the small land owners were forced out of business. They could not work their own land any longer. They had to find work either on someone elses land or in a different line of business. Enclosure took away the populations right to choose what they wanted to do. It did not allow them to farm for themselves. Greed Greed did not increase during the Industrial Revolution. There was just as much greed before the revolution as there was during it. The poor treatment of children did not get any worse. It just became more noticeable because it was all in the same place. People started noticing the poor treatment of children because it was all in the factories instead of being widespread as it was before the revolution. There are many examples of the poor treatment of children before the revolution ever started. Robert Owen was ten years old when he was an apprentice, and said the following: Frequently at two oclock in the morning, after working all day from 8 AM, I had been barely able, with the aid of the bannisters, to go upstairs to bed. (Bin. p.101) Another example of the mistreatment of children is shown by the following quote: He employed 17 apprentice girls, and had so cruelly ill- treated and starved them that 5 had died. The girls usually worked at embroidery on muslim !from 4 or 5 in the morning until 10 or 11 at night. Their food was usually bread and water The 17 slept in an attic in 3 beds. (Bin. p.101) This kind of poor treatment of children before the revolution started was common all throughout England. There was an improvement in child labor laws towards the end of the revolution. The Factory Act of 1833 forbade the employment of children under 9 in textile mills, limited children aged 9-13 to working 9 hours per day and 48 hours per week, and limited children aged 13-18 to working 12 hours per day and 69 hours per week. The Mines Act of 1842 banned boys under 10 and all females from working underground. The Ten Hours Act of 1847 limited work for children under 18 and all females to 10 hours a day. (Bin. p.102) Towards the end of the revolution, the government passed these laws to limit child labor and show that they were not greedy. Pessimists point to handloom weavers being driven out of business as an example of the gre!ed in the revolution. But, that was not greed. If there was a better way to produce a product, then why would someone not want to use the better method? They had 20 years to shift to a new occupation. Their refusal to do so was the result of stubbornness. (Bin. p.97) Pessimists point out that children were widely mistreated in factories. However, the poor treatment was only noticed because it was in the same place instead of being spread out all over the country as it was before the revolution started. Laslett argued, The coming of industry did not bring economic oppression. Nor did it create a situation where workers were exploited. These things were already there. As members of the family workforce, children were vocational apprentices of the parent of their own sex: fathers trained sons in agriculture or in the family trade, while mothers taught housewifery to their girls. Children were to be prepared for the immediate world of their upbringing, if reading and writing skills were not needed to tend to tobacco, then they were last to be taught. Evolution: Charles Darwins theory was that species change over time, or evolve, in response to their environment. A good example of this is the evolution of the Kangaroo. Approximately 55 MYA the kangaroos looked quite similar to a possum and it was a tree dweller with a prehensile tail, but as Gondwana split up, the rainforests disappeared, the climate became hotter and the land dry and arid, the kangaroo evolved along the way and have come to look like what they do now. Survival: Some species have higher survival rates than others because they are more adaptable to new conditions and aren’t a completely specialized species like the Koala. For example the platypus has survived over millions of years because it has learnt to adapt to its changing environment rather than dying off because it can’t cope with environmental change. Extinction: Most species become extinct because they can’t cope with the environmental change, and also because of introduced species that turned into competitors for territory and food. E.g. the Thylacine or better known as the Tasmanian Tiger started to die off due to competition of introduced species, mainly the Dingo. As the Dingoes numbers increased the Thylacine’s decreased because the Dingoes were hunting the Thylacines source of food and was taking over their territories. In the novel by Mark Twain, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the two main characters, Huck and Jim, are strongly linked. Their relation is portrayed by various sides, some of them good and some others bad. But the essential interest of that relation is the way that uses the author to describe it. Even if he had often been misunderstood, Twain always implied a message behind the themes developed around Huck and Jim. The first encounter between Huck Finn and Jim is at the beginning of the book, when Huck’s friend, Tom Sawyer, tries to fool Jim, Miss Watson’s slave. Huck and Jim still don’t know each other, but Huck isn’t biased against the old slave. It’s an important point because, as racism was a widely held mentality in the South, we can learn that that young boy was more open-minded than most people there. Later, they find themselves in the same situation. As they were escaping from the civilized world, they take refuge in the Jackson’s Island, on the Mississippi river. Huck is running away from a bad father and Jim has leaved Miss Watson because he didn’t want to be sold to New Orleans. Soon after joining Jim on the island, Huck begins to realize that Jim has more talents and intelligence than Huck has been aware of. Jim knows "all kinds of signs" about the future, people's personalities, and weather forecasting. Huck finds this kind of information necessary as he and Jim drift down the Mississippi on a raft. As important, Huck feels a comfort with Jim that he has not felt with the other major characters in the novel. With Jim, Huck can enjoy the best aspects of his earlier influences. Jim's meaning to Huck changes as they proceed through their adventure. He starts out as an extra person just to take on the journey, but they transform into a friend. "It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger."(chap. XV) Huck tries to squeal on Jim but can't because he remembers that Jim called him "de bes' fren' I ever had;...de on'y white genlman dat ever kep' his promise to ole Jim."(chap. XVI) Huck reali zes that he can not turn Jim in since they both act as runaway outcasts on the river. The support they have for each other sprouts friendship. As does the Widow, Jim allows Huck security, but Jim is not as confining as is the Widow. Like Tom Sawyer, Jim is intelligent but his intelligence ... ...cial bigot, Tom. In addition, both sacrifices have as a consequence a life of everlasting hell. When Huck sacrifices himself for Jim, he accepts a literal hell (that is truly the path to heaven). Jim, on the other hand, accepts a life of figurative hell in slavery, when he is in fact free all along. Finally, each sacrifice shares irony, in that they were both based on unknown pieces of unknown, but significant pieces of information. Huck is unaware that his decision of accepting "hell" will actually lead to his salvation and ironically decides on doing what the thinks is "wrong." Likewise, Jim is unaware that he is free, and is not risking his freedom in saving Tom. In making these two brave sacrifices, Huck and Jim achieve a higher character than if they had chosen easier paths. Huck's willingness to face hell to protect Jim and Jim's willingness to face capture and slavery to save Tom, both contribute to the overall theme of racial equality/inequality present throughout the book. Huck and Jim's journey down the Mississippi River has led them to look past colour boundaries, and discover that "all me are created equal."

Every AP Literature Practice Test Available Free and Official SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips When you’re studying for your AP Literature Exam, you’re going to want to use practice tests and questions to hone your skills. But where can you find AP literature practice tests? And are all practice exams equally useful for you? The real exam has 55 multiple-choice questions and three free-response questions, but there are practice tests with every conceivable number and combination of question types. In this article, you’ll learn where to find every official College Board AP English Literature and Composition practice exam, free unofficial tests, and paid practice test resources. You’ll also find out which tests are high-quality and how you can best use different practice exams to fulfill your studying needs. Official Free AP Literature Practice Tests The gold standard of AP English Literature practice tests and AP English Literature practice exam questions are College Board released materials. That’s because the College Board administers the AP exams, so their practice questions are most like the actual AP questions you’ll see on the test. There are three different kinds of resources offered by the College Board: complete released exams from past years, released free-response questions from past years, and sample questions from the â€Å"AP Course And Exam Description.† Official Released College Board Exams There are three official released College Board Exams. However, only the most recent one (from 2012) is complete. The 1999 and 1987 exams have the standard 55 multiple-choice questions, but both are missing parts of the three question free-response section. You can still use them as complete exams if you supplement them with released free-response questions from past years which we recommend since official multiple-choice problems are hard to come by. 2012 AP English Literature and Composition Exam This is the best AP Lit practice test available. It's the most recent exam released by the College Board, and it follows the format of the current test with 55 multiple-choice questions and three free-response questions. Definitely make use of this test! 1999 AP English Literature and Composition Exam This test excludes the poetry and prose analysis questions of the free-response section and only has the student choice question.So, to take itas a complete exam, you’d need to supplement it with questions 1 and 2 from the released free-response questions below. You can actually getquestion 2for the 1999 test from the official free-response questions bank, but the excerpt for question 1 can’t be reprinted, so you’ll need to supplement with another poetry analysis question. 1987 AP English Literature and Composition ExamFor reasons that are not totally clear, this exam excludes the third essay question, the poetry analysis. If you want to take this as â€Å"complete† exam practice, use a free-response poetry analysis prompt from the bank of free response questions linked to below. Or supplement with this tree-poem. Official Free-Response Questions There may not be very many complete released exams, but there are tons of free-response questions available from previous administrations of the test. These are great practice, not just for practicing complete essays, but for practicing writing thesis statements, outlines, and so on. What’s also great about these is that most of them come with sample response and scoring guidelines, so you’ll be able to see exactly what makes a high-quality AP essay by College Board standards.Be aware, though, that some of the prose and poetry excerpts can’t be reprinted due to copyright concerns. Below isthe link to all the free-response questions available.The questions go all the way back to 1999, and since there haven't been many changes to the free-response part of the exam, all of these questions can be useful during your studying. AP English Lit Free Response Questions 1999-2019 Sample Questions From the Course and Exam Description The AP English Literature Course and Exam Description has practice multiple-choice questions and free-response questions. They don’t add up to a complete testthere are only 46 multiple-choice questions and a whopping six free response (enough for two tests!)but they are great for simple practice. Your Teacher Your AP teacher may have access to copies of old AP exams that you can use for practice. She probably can’t let you take them out of the classroom, but she may be allowed to loan them to you in a supervised setting. This is because teachers can purchase resources directly from the College Board that students can’t. Asking your teacher may not bear fruit, but it’s worth a try. Why are you asking me for AP lit practice tests? I'm your econ teacher! Free Unofficial AP Literature Practice Tests In addition to the free College Board resources, there are also several places online where you can get free, unofficial practice tests. Be aware that, because these resources aren’t College-Board created or approved, they are of variable quality. For each of these resources I’ll describe what’s offered and how it compares to official College Board tests. Barron’s Books Free Practice Test Barron’s, those distinguished makers of review books, also offer a complete free practice test with multiple choice and free response.They provide the author and name of the work, but not the date. All of these free resources probably credit the authors for copyright reasons, but you won’t have this information on the actual exam. You can take the test timed or in â€Å"practice† mode.While answers are provided for the multiple-choice questions, no scoring guidelines are provided for the free-response prompts. This isn’t an official resource, but the questions are high quality and a good option when you’ve run out of official material. If you combined the multiple-choice questions with some official released free-response questions (with scoring guidelines and sample essays) you could geta pretty good approximation of a complete practice test. Varsity Tutors AP Literature Practice Tests This site has practice multiple-choice quizzes divided by conceptthings like â€Å"interpreting the passage,† â€Å"claims and argument,† and â€Å"interpreting excerpts.† The questions aren’t worded exactly the same way as AP test questions, but they are still okay for testing your passage-interpretation skills. Basically, the questions test for similar skills, but don’t necessarily mimic AP test questions in style. Also, the site provides the date, title, and author of each work, which is not something you’ll receive on the AP exam.You can make a free account at the site to track your scores, but it’s not necessary to be able to take the tests. Kittens not included with free practice tests, unfortunately. Albert AP English Literature Quizzes Albert offers multiple-choice quizzes divided into prose, poetry, and drama categories. You are given the title, date, and author of the workwhich you will not receive on the real AP exam. Like the Varsity Tutors quizzes, Albert offers questions that test similar skills as the AP exam, but the questions are worded differently. High School Test Prep Tests This site offers three short multiple-choice practice tests. You’re given the title and author of the work. The questions for these tests are fairly surface-level, so I would only use these if you are working on your reading comprehension skills. CrackAP English Literature Quizzes CrackAP has over 40 short AP Lit quizzes. Each quiz gives a passage then has 15 multiple-choice questions on it. The questions are somewhat easier than you'll find on the real AP exam, but if you need some quick practice, this can do the trick. Practice Quiz AP English Literature This site offers a 20-question multiple-choice quiz on two passagesone poetry, and one prose. The passages are extremely basic, however, so again, I would only use this resource if you are working on your reading comprehension skills. 4Tests AP English Lit Test This site offers 35 multiple-choice questions. However, there are lots of ads, the questions are poorly written and vague, the interface is clunky, and the passages are very long. Overall, I do not recommend this site. College Board SAT Literature Materials While they aren’t identical by any means, you can definitely use SAT Literature Subject Test practice questions to hone your skill in answering multiple-choice questions about passages. The SAT Subject Test in Literature focuses a little more on the meaning of words and phrases in context and less on making inferences and describing the author’s purpose, but they can still be a useful resource simply for reading and answering high-level, in-depth questions on prose and poetry. You can get sample SAT Literature questions online hereor in the â€Å"The SAT Subject Tests Student Guide† booklet released by the College Board. The queens of AP Lit practice give you their blessing. Paid Unofficial Practice Tests There are also several paid resources that offer unofficial practice questions. Shmoop This is a subscription service with questions for tons of different testsSAT, ACT, AP exams.They also have videos and other review resources. I can’t really speak to the quality of the questions because the entire service is behind a paywall of about $25 a month. Review Books Most, if not all, review books contain practice tests and questions. These will vary in quality depending on the quality of the review book, so be sure to look for reviews online of any book before you buy it. In general, Barron’s and the Princeton Review are fairly reliable review book sources. I definitely advise paying for all of these resources with whatever loose foreign change you have lying around. How to Use AP Literature Practice Tests How to use a given practice test depends somewhat on the resource itself. I’ll offer some recommendations here on how to best use different resources. Complete Official Released Tests The best way to use a complete official practice test is to do a practice-run for the exam. So find a quiet room, bring a timer or watch so you can time sections, and get to work! This will help you get familiar with the exam experience so you’ll feel more comfortable on exam day! Since there are two complete AP Lit practice tests, it makes sense to take one early on in your studying time, and one later. You can get a parent, tutor or teacher to grade the exams. The early test will help you figure out what you need to work on, and the later test will show you how you’ve improved! Since the AP English Literature test is more skills-heavy than content-heavy, you shouldn’t feel totally lost taking a practice test even in the middle of the school year. Official Released Free-Response and Sample Questions Official resources that aren’t complete tests are best for practicing individual sections of the test. The sample multiple-choice questions in the â€Å"Course and Exam Description† make for great AP English Literature multiple-choice practicethey’ll help you get familiar with the style of the questions and practice close-reading. The wealth of released free-response questions are great resources for building your timed essay-writing skills. You can practice complete essays ordevelop essay outlines. Unofficial Practice Tests and Resources Since unofficial practice tests aren’t going to be quite as similar to the real AP exam as official College Board materials, they won’t be quite as useful for preparing for the format of the exam or its questions. However, they can be very valuable close-reading practice. And since that’s a critical skill for the exam, it’s still worth it to use unofficial resources. Be very quiet. She's close-reading.
